Thought for the day Friday 19th June 2026

What’s a common misconception people have about happiness?

One of the most common misconceptions about happiness is the belief that it can be bought—specifically through material things.
We’re constantly surrounded by messages telling us that the next purchase will make us feel better. A new kitchen gadget, a trend-led outfit, a more expensive car, a perfectly styled home. And while these things can bring a short burst of excitement, that feeling rarely lasts.
The truth is, material items tend to deliver temporary satisfaction rather than lasting happiness. There’s even a psychological term for it—hedonic adaptation—which means we quickly get used to new things, and they stop bringing us the same level of joy. What once felt exciting soon becomes normal, and the cycle starts again.
This is especially relevant in a world of social media, where it’s easy to believe that happiness looks like having more—more products, more upgrades, more “perfect” moments. But often, what we’re really seeing is a highlight reel, not a true reflection of emotional wellbeing.
Real, lasting happiness tends to come from less tangible things: meaningful relationships, a sense of purpose, good health, and feeling at peace in your day-to-day life. Even simple routines—like cooking a nourishing meal, going for a walk, or spending time with loved ones—often bring more genuine contentment than any purchase ever could.
That’s not to say money or nice things don’t have a place. They absolutely can enhance life and bring comfort. But they’re not the source of happiness—they’re just accessories to it.
The real shift happens when we stop chasing happiness through accumulation and start building it through how we live, connect, and take care of ourselves.
