If you love a smoothie that tastes like a proper treat but still feels nourishing, you need to try this Berry Silk Smoothie.

It is thick, creamy, naturally sweet and full of frozen blueberries and cherries, with Greek yoghurt, flaxseed and almond butter blended in for a really satisfying breakfast or afternoon snack. It honestly tastes a little like a berry milkshake, but with ingredients that will keep you fuller for longer.
I love using frozen fruit for smoothies because it makes them extra thick without needing loads of ice. Blueberries give this smoothie its gorgeous deep-purple colour, while cherries add a lovely sweetness that works so well with the creamy yoghurt and subtle vanilla.
WHY I USE GREEK YOGHURT INSTEAD OF PROTEIN POWDER
I have nothing against protein powder, and it can be a handy option when you want a quick protein boost. But for this smoothie, I prefer Greek yoghurt.
Greek yoghurt naturally adds protein, while also giving the smoothie that silky, creamy texture that can sometimes be missing when you use powder. It is also a source of calcium, which is important for healthy bones and teeth.
Another advantage is that Greek yoghurt is a whole food ingredient, so you do not need to buy a separate supplement or worry about finding a flavour that works with the fruit. Some protein powders can have a strong artificial taste or make a smoothie a little chalky, whereas plain Greek yoghurt lets the blueberry and cherry flavours shine through.
Using Greek yoghurt also makes this recipe really easy to adapt. Choose plain Greek yoghurt for a fresher, tangier smoothie, use vanilla Greek yoghurt for extra sweetness, or swap it for a high-protein yoghurt or Skyr if you would like an even bigger protein boost. If you are dairy-free, a thick unsweetened soya yoghurt is a great alternative—just look for one that is fortified with calcium.
This is not a miracle “anti-ageing” drink, because no one smoothie can turn back the clock. But it is a delicious way to add fruit, protein, fibre and healthier fats into your day, and that is always a lovely place to start.
BERRY SILK SMOOTHIE RECIPE

Makes: 1 large smoothie
INGREDIENTS
100g frozen blueberries
75g frozen cherries
½ frozen banana
150ml milk of choice
100g Greek yoghurt
1 tbsp ground flaxseed
1 tbsp almond butter
1 tbsp porridge oats
½ tsp vanilla extract
1 scoop unflavoured collagen peptides, optional
A handful of ice
METHOD
- Add the frozen blueberries, frozen cherries, banana, milk, Greek yoghurt, flaxseed, almond butter, porridge oats, vanilla and collagen, if using, to a blender.
- Blend until completely smooth, thick and creamy. Add a little more milk if needed, but try not to add too much as you want that lovely milkshake-style texture.
- Pour into a glass and garnish with a few blueberries, a cherry, flaked almonds and a little sprinkle of flaxseed.
- Enjoy straight away while it is icy cold and creamy.
TOP TIPS
Use a frozen banana rather than a fresh one for the thickest smoothie.
If you do not have cherries, use extra frozen blueberries or a bag of frozen summer fruits.
For a sweeter smoothie, add a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup.
For a more filling breakfast, add an extra tablespoon of oats.
For a dairy-free version, use an unsweetened calcium-fortified plant milk and a thick soya yoghurt.
