Healthy Cottage Cheese Pizza Recipe (High Protein, Easy & So Delicious)

If you had told me a few years ago that I’d be making pizza with cottage cheese, I honestly would have been very unsure. Cottage cheese in a jacket potato? Absolutely. On toast with chilli flakes? Lovely. But as the base of a pizza? I wasn’t convinced.

But this healthy cottage cheese pizza is one of those recipes that genuinely surprised me. It is quick, protein-packed, properly filling and, most importantly, still gives you that comforting pizza-night feeling. The base comes out golden around the edges, sturdy enough to pick up and eat, and it works so well topped with melty mozzarella, chicken and lots of colourful vegetables.

It is the perfect midweek dinner when you fancy something cosy but still want to make a lighter choice. Even better, the whole pizza comes in at roughly 454 calories, with around 45g of protein, depending on the brands you use and how generous you are with the toppings.

This is not a replacement for a big takeaway pizza with extra garlic dip. Nothing needs to replace that! But for an easy, healthy fakeaway or a quick high-protein lunch, this cottage cheese pizza is such a good one to have in your recipe rotation.

Why you’ll love this healthy cottage cheese pizza

It is made with simple supermarket ingredients.

There is no waiting for dough to rise.

It is high in protein and surprisingly satisfying.

You can use whatever toppings you have in the fridge.

It is ready in around 30 minutes.

It is ideal for a healthy lunch, easy dinner or fakeaway Friday.

The recipe makes one generous personal pizza, so there is no awkward dividing of toppings.

The best part is that the base is so easy. You simply blend cottage cheese and egg, mix in a little self-raising flour and seasoning, then bake it before adding your toppings. It sounds unusual, but it is genuinely delicious.

    Healthy cottage cheese pizza recipe

    Serves: 1

    Prep time: 10 minutes

    Cook time: 25–30 minutes

    Calories: approximately 454 kcal

    Protein: approximately 45g

    Ingredients

For the cottage cheese pizza base

    150g fat-free cottage cheese

    1 large egg

    35g self-raising flour

    ¼ tsp garlic granules

½ tsp dried Italian herbs or dried oregano

    Pinch of salt

    Pinch of black pepper

    For the toppings

2 tbsp passata or pizza sauce

    30g reduced-fat mozzarella, grated

50g cooked chicken breast, sliced or torn into pieces

    ¼ red pepper, thinly sliced

    3–4 cherry tomatoes, halved

    2 tbsp sweetcorn

    Small handful of baby spinach

    Fresh basil, to serve

    Chilli flakes, to serve

    Hot honey, optional

How to make cottage cheese pizza

    Step 1: Preheat the oven

Preheat your oven to 200°C fan / 220°C conventional / gas mark 7. Line a baking tray with baking paper.

Using baking paper is important here, as the cottage cheese base can be slightly soft before it bakes. It will make it much easier to lift and serve once cooked too.

Step 2: Make the cottage cheese pizza base

Add the cottage cheese and egg to a blender, food processor or mini chopper. Blend until smooth.

If you do not have a blender, do not worry. You can mash the cottage cheese with a fork and whisk it very well with the egg. The final base will have a little more texture, but it will still work perfectly.

Transfer the mixture to a bowl and stir in the self-raising flour, garlic granules, dried herbs, salt and black pepper. You should have a thick batter-like mixture.

    Step 3: Shape and bake

Spoon the mixture onto your lined baking tray. Use the back of a spoon to spread it into a circle around 20cm wide.

Try not to spread it too thinly. You want it thin enough to feel like pizza, but thick enough that it holds together when you add the toppings. Around half a centimetre thick is ideal.

Bake the base for 18–20 minutes, until it is golden at the edges, firm in the centre and no longer looks wet.

    Step 4: Add the toppings

Remove the tray from the oven and spread the passata over the base, leaving a little edge for a crust.

Sprinkle over the mozzarella, then add the chicken, red pepper, cherry tomatoes, sweetcorn and baby spinach. I love this topping combination because it is colourful, filling and gives you a really good mix of flavours and textures.

The chicken and mozzarella make it high in protein, while the vegetables add freshness and make it feel like a more substantial meal.

    Step 5: Bake again

Pop the pizza back into the oven for another 6–8 minutes, until the cheese is melted, the tomatoes are soft and the topping is piping hot.

Leave it to sit for a couple of minutes before slicing. This is a small step, but it helps the base firm up and makes it easier to cut into neat slices.

Finish with fresh basil, chilli flakes and a light drizzle of hot honey if you like a sweet and spicy kick.

    Cottage cheese pizza topping ideas

One of the things I love about this recipe is how easy it is to customise. Once you have made the cottage cheese pizza base, you can make it taste completely different every time.

    Mediterranean vegetable cottage cheese pizza

Top with passata, mozzarella, roasted peppers, red onion, olives, spinach and crumbled feta. Finish with fresh basil and a little balsamic glaze.

    Chicken pesto cottage cheese pizza

Swap the passata for a thin layer of pesto, then top with chicken, mozzarella, cherry tomatoes and rocket. Add the rocket after baking so it stays fresh and peppery.

    Spicy chicken cottage cheese pizza

Use chicken, red pepper, jalapeños and sweetcorn, then finish with chilli flakes and hot honey. This is probably my favourite version when I fancy something a little more like a takeaway-style pizza.

    Veggie garden pizza

Use mushrooms, red onion, peppers, spinach and sweetcorn. You could also add courgette ribbons, but I would pat them dry first so the pizza does not become watery.

    Turkey pepperoni cottage cheese pizza

For a healthier pepperoni-style pizza, add a few slices of turkey pepperoni with mozzarella and sliced peppers. You could use regular pepperoni too, but it will increase the calories and fat slightly.

Tips for the best cottage cheese pizza base

Blend the cottage cheese if possible.

Blending gives the base a smoother texture and helps it cook more evenly. It also means that anyone who is unsure about cottage cheese will not really notice it once the pizza is baked.

Bake the base before adding toppings.

This is the most important step. The base needs time to firm up before you add the passata and mozzarella. If you add toppings straight away, it can become soft and harder to lift.

    Avoid overly wet toppings.

Passata, fresh tomatoes, mushrooms and spinach can all release moisture as they cook. Use a small amount of sauce, avoid piling on wet vegetables and pat anything particularly watery dry before adding it to the pizza.

    Let it rest before slicing.

Give the pizza two or three minutes once it comes out of the oven. It will set slightly as it cools, making it easier to slice and eat with your hands.

How many calories are in this cottage cheese pizza?

Using the ingredients listed above, the full pizza is approximately 454 calories, 45g protein, 44g carbohydrates and 11g fat.

Nutrition will always vary depending on the exact brand of cottage cheese, mozzarella, chicken and pizza sauce you use. If you are closely tracking calories or macros, add the specific brands you use into your preferred food-tracking app.

For a lower-calorie version, use 25g mozzarella instead of 30g and load the pizza with extra spinach, mushrooms or peppers. For a higher-protein version, increase the cooked chicken to 75g or add a few slices of lean turkey pepperoni.

What does cottage cheese pizza taste like?

The base does not taste strongly of cottage cheese. Once it has been blended with egg, flour, garlic and herbs, then baked, it has a mild savoury flavour that works really nicely with traditional pizza toppings.

It is not exactly like a chewy, yeasted Italian pizza dough, so I would not pretend that it is. Think of it more as a cross between a thin omelette-style flatbread and a high-protein pizza base. It is soft in the middle, golden around the edges and ideal when you want something quick and lighter than a standard pizza.

The toppings make a huge difference too. A little tomato sauce, melted mozzarella, chicken and seasoning make it feel comforting, familiar and very much like pizza night.

Can I make this cottage cheese pizza gluten-free?

Yes, you can. Swap the self-raising flour for a good-quality gluten-free self-raising flour blend. Different blends absorb liquid differently, so if your mixture seems very loose, stir in an extra teaspoon or two of flour until it is thick enough to spread.

You can also try oat flour if you tolerate oats, although the texture may be slightly softer. Make sure to use certified gluten-free oats if you need the recipe to be suitable for coeliac disease.

    Can I make it vegetarian?

Definitely. Leave out the chicken and add more vegetables, mushrooms or vegetarian chicken-style pieces. Crumbled feta, a little goat’s cheese or extra mozzarella are also lovely, although they will change the macros.

For a really filling vegetarian version, try topping the pizza with mushrooms, peppers, sweetcorn, spinach and a little reduced-fat feta. Add rocket after baking and finish with cracked black pepper.

Can I meal prep cottage cheese pizza?

This recipe is best eaten fresh, especially if you want the base to stay crisp around the edges. However, you can make the base in advance and keep it in the fridge for up to two days.

Bake the base without toppings, allow it to cool completely, then store it in an airtight container in the fridge. When you are ready to eat it, add your toppings and bake until hot and bubbling.

You can also prep all your toppings in advance, which makes this a very easy lunch or dinner to throw together on a busy day.

    Final thoughts

If you love an easy healthy fakeaway, this cottage cheese pizza is absolutely worth trying. It is high in protein, loaded with flavour and feels far more indulgent than the calories suggest.

It is one of those recipes that works brilliantly when you want a quick dinner without spending ages in the kitchen. Make it with chicken and colourful vegetables, go full veggie, add turkey pepperoni or turn it into a spicy hot-honey pizza — the base is simple enough to work with whatever you are craving.

If you make it, I would love to know which toppings you go for. And if you are sharing it on TikTok or Instagram, do not forget the all-important cheese pull shot before you tuck in!
